March 2, 2022 – Fairfax County, Va. – Fairfax County parent Saundra Davis announced her candidacy for an at-large seat on the Fairfax County School Board. Davis acknowledges a wide range of issues that need attention in Fairfax County Public Schools, the most important of which is to put the focus back on academics over the partisan politics of the current school board members and Superintendent.
“Groups of decision makers cannot function properly without diversity of thought or by locking alternative points of view out of the conversation,” said Davis, who identifies as a moderate.
Other main issues she points out are learning loss and the mental fallout from extended school closures; a deviation from academic rigor including declining test scores and new grading policies; an exodus of teachers and students from FCPS; and finally, the school system’s failure when it comes to special education students.
Davis, the mother of three children and a retired military spouse, said when her family settled in Fairfax County for the top-notch schools, running for school board was not on her radar. She didn't consider it until children were shut out of county schools for nearly two years during COVID. Davis views the lack of focus on academics in local public education as a threat to the future of the students and a risk to our national security.
Davis grew up as a military child, has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Colorado State University, and spent her postgraduate years at University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she earned Masters degrees in Health Care Administration and Gerontology.
Although she has been on the campaign trail for months, a formal launch is planned for Sunday March 26th at Burke Lake Park, which will be both a picnic and a book drive for disadvantaged FCPS students. The event begins at 1:00pm and features special guest, Virginia state senator Siobhan Dunnavant, who lead the bipartisan effort to reopen Virginia schools post pandemic and also serves as a member of the state Education and Health Committee.
